There's
an old saying:
"Feed a man a
fish and you will feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you will
feed him for a lifetime".
That's the premise
behind "Hope Through Humanity",
a privately funded foundation that provides educational scholarships to
underprivileged children and disadvantaged adults, in Peru, to study English.
The brainchild of Geoff Dominy and Gkori Chuquispuma Cueva, "Hope
Through Humanity" is currently working with QUEST SCHOOL OF
ENGLISH, a small
privately run English school in San Juan Miraflores, Lima, Peru, that offers affordable English instruction to those less
fortunate.
The concept is very simple, by providing educational scholarships, we can do so much more
than simply offer financial support.
The latter, while helping
initially, creates dependency, which in most cases, lasts a lifetime.
On the other hand, if we can provide a child, a young man or woman with English,
it can open up endless possibilities which will hopefully help them support
themselves
for the rest of their lives.
"Knowing English, will open up many doors and provide the necessary tools to get a better job and possibly even leave Peru to
work overseas to help support their families. Even though QUEST will
offer English instruction for a fraction of the cost of other English schools in the
area, there will still be many people who simply can't afford the courses. Through the
sale of products provided by like minded artisans, from all disciplines and
genres, "Hope Through Humanity" hopes to provide the necessary
funding".
The common problem with education is affordability. "Schools want
to make money. QUEST, on the other hand, simply wants to cover the
administrative costs. By eliminating the need to have an elaborate
infrastructure and generate a profit, it is
possible to make education affordable on a larger scale"
"Hope
Through Humanity" is not government funded. While we are happy to
accept financial support from private individuals and other organizations
(see Friends of Hope Through Humanity), the majority of funds will be
raised through the sale of products, from like minded artisans, from all
disciplines and genres. These products will be sold through the "Hope Through Humanity"
website with a portion of the profits going to the foundation.
Each year, we also plan to stage various "Hope Through Humanity"
events, where we hope to bring together those "Supporting
Artisans" who share our vision and support our cause, in order to
celebrate their work and creativity.
